Study with me: how to run a focused study session
By Vania Ejaz · Updated September 12, 2026 · 7 min read
A study with me session is a fixed block of time where you study alongside someone else, on a video, on a live stream or in an app. It works because of body doubling, a timer that is not yours to negotiate with, and a room that stays the same. This guide explains the genre, then shows you how to run your own focused study session step by step.
Type "study with me" into any video platform and you will find thousands of hours of people quietly working at a desk. No talking, no tutorial, sometimes not even a face. Just a timer in the corner, a lamp, rain on a window, and someone turning pages. A lot of students watch them, and if you have never tried it, that can sound strange. It is not. It is one of the simplest ways to make a study session actually happen.
What a study with me study session is, and why it works
The format is almost always the same. Someone records or streams themselves studying in real time, usually in Pomodoro blocks: twenty-five or fifty minutes of work, then a short break, repeated for one to several hours. You press play, start your own work, and follow their clock. Three things make it work.
- Body doubling. Working next to another person who is also working makes starting easier and stopping harder, even when that person is on a screen and cannot see you. The study buddy guide covers this in more depth.
- A fixed timer. The clock is not yours. You cannot pause it, add five minutes, or decide the break starts now. When the timer belongs to someone else, you stop negotiating with it.
- An ambient room. The same desk, the same lamp, the same soft sound. Your brain learns that this scene means work, and after a few study sessions the scene itself does some of the starting for you.
The genre borrows all three from the Pomodoro method, which is why the two words so often appear together. If you have not read about it, the Pomodoro technique explains why the blocks are the length they are.
How to run your own study with me session
You do not need a camera, a channel or an audience. You need a plan you can follow without thinking, so that all your thinking goes into the material. Here is the sequence.
- Decide the end time before you start. Two hours means two hours. Write the finish time somewhere visible. A study session with no end is a study session you will bail on early, because there is nothing to hold out for.
- Pick one subject and one outcome. Not "biology". "Finish chapter six and be able to explain the three stages without looking." If you cannot say what done looks like, you will not know when you are done.
- Set up the room once. Water, notes, a charger, the book open to the right page. Every trip to the kitchen is a break you did not plan.
- Phone goes somewhere else. Another room, a bag, a drawer. Face down on the desk does not count. If your timer is on your phone, that is fine, but only if the app keeps running with the screen locked so you never have to unlock it.
- Start the timer and do not touch it. The block length is decided. Your only job now is to stay in the chair until it ends.
- Take the break away from the desk. Stand up, stretch, look at something far away. Do not open a feed. A break that starts with scrolling is a break that does not end.
- Repeat until the end time. The second and third blocks are usually better than the first, so do not judge the session by how the opening ten minutes felt.
- Finish with a recap out loud. More on this below. It takes five minutes and it is the part that turns time spent into things learned.
If you want to go live or record it, the setup is the same. Camera on the desk, timer visible, no commentary. The audience is there to work beside you, not to be entertained, and the moment you start talking you have become the distraction.
Choosing a study room ambience for your study session
The room in a study with me video matters more than it seems. A consistent scene is a cue: sit here, hear this, and the work starts. If you are watching someone else's video, pick one creator and stick with their room rather than browsing for a new vibe every day. Browsing is a decision, and decisions are what you are trying to remove.
Ingatik: Recall builds the room into the app. A study buddy sits beside you in a scene while the timer runs, and you choose the scene. The bedroom is free for everyone. Six more rooms come with the Pro and Max plans: a park, a beach, a campsite, a balcony, a library and a rooftop. Each one is a flat, quiet illustration rather than a video, so nothing in it moves or asks for your attention. Whizzy the beaver is the free buddy; seven more Whizzes come from a monthly lucky box on paid plans.
Whichever you use, the advice is the same: pick a room, keep it, and let it do its job. The timer below is a fifteen-second version of the app's session, if you want to see the rhythm.
In the app, every session ends with a voice recap → AI summary.
Pomodoro lengths for a two hour study session
Two hours is the most common study with me length, and there are a few sensible ways to cut it. Pick the one that matches the work, not the one that sounds most impressive.
| Layout | Blocks | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Classic | 4 x 25 min study, 5 min breaks | Reading, note-making, mixed subjects |
| Deep | 2 x 50 min study, 10 min break | Essays, problem sets, anything with a long warm-up |
| Warm-up | 1 x 15, then 3 x 30 min, 5 min breaks | Days when starting feels impossible |
| Sprint | 6 x 15 min study, 5 min breaks | Flashcards, memorising, low-energy evenings |
In Ingatik you set the number of pomodoros, the study length and the break length yourself, and a study session can be as short as two minutes if that is all you can face today. A two-minute session that happens beats a two-hour one that does not. Breaks include a guided stretch-and-breathe routine so you have something to do that is not your phone. End every study session with a recap out loud
Most study with me sessions end when the timer does. That wastes the best five minutes of the whole thing. Right after the last block, close the notes and explain what you just studied out loud, as if teaching it to someone who was not there. Cover what the topic was, the two or three ideas that matter most, and the thing you are still unsure about.
Saying it out loud is not a ritual. It is a test. If the explanation comes out clean, you know it. If you stall, you have found the gap while there is still time to fix it, which is the whole point of active recall.
This is the step Ingatik is named for. When a session ends, you record a voice note teaching the material back, and AI turns it into an editable summary, a next-tasks list and a short multiple-choice recall check. Tasks you already finished are ticked off. Every study session adds Logs to your total, and studying on consecutive days keeps a streak going. The free plan includes one study session and one recap of up to five minutes a day, which is exactly one good study with me session.

Frequently asked questions
- What does study with me mean?
- A study with me is a video or live stream of someone studying in real time, usually in Pomodoro blocks with a visible timer. You study alongside them and follow their clock.
- Why do study with me videos help?
- Three reasons: body doubling, because working beside someone makes starting easier and stopping harder; a timer you cannot negotiate with; and a consistent room that becomes a cue to work.
- How long should a study with me session be?
- Two hours is the most common. Split it into four 25-minute blocks with 5-minute breaks, or two 50-minute blocks with a 10-minute break for deeper work. Shorter is fine if it means you actually start.
- Can I do a study with me session alone?
- Yes. Set an end time, pick one outcome, put your phone in another room, start a timer you will not touch, and finish with a recap out loud. An app like Ingatik gives you a buddy, a room and the recap step without a camera.
- Does the Ingatik timer keep running if I lock my phone?
- Yes. The timer keeps running in the background and sends a notification when a phase ends, so you never have to unlock your phone mid-block.
- What study rooms does Ingatik have?
- Seven. The bedroom is free. The park, beach, campsite, balcony, library and rooftop are included with the Pro and Max plans.
